The name “Sorrento” probably comes from the myth of the mermaids, Omero in his legendary “ ODISSEA ”, wrote about it as the land of the mermaids (half woman and half rooster, of which are represented on ancient vases ).
The first settlers were Italic, Greek or Punic. The Turks came here with their ships in 1558 sacked and destroyed it carrying many inhabitants as slaves. Influenced along the ages by many cultures Etruscun, Greek, Roman, French and Spanish, Sorrento lived a very prolific period. At the beginning of 18 century, Sorrento became the culture economical and social destination when European noblemen Kings, Princes, Philosophers,
Poets and Artists embarked on the “Italian Gran Tour” helped it to become famous and appreciated by distinguished guests such as Keats, Byron, Scott, Dickens, Ibsen, Wagner and so many others.
